Minneapolis Real Estate South of the Mississippi

Minneapolis, Minnesota is a smorgasbord of commerce, industry, arts, and culture.  With a population of a little under 390,000 citizens, Minneapolis is the largest city in Minnesota.  It lies in Hennepin County and makes up part of the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area, which draws many commuters.  The city is known for its culture, literacy, energy efficiency, and its support of environmental awareness, safety, and fit, healthy lifestyles.   As such, the city provides a number of green transportation alternatives.  Trails allow bicyclists to commute safely to work and the light rail and metro buses thread routes throughout the city’s communities.

Like many major cities, Minneapolis real estate is divided into neighborhoods.  Minneapolis in particular sections itself into eleven communities, each split up into distinctive neighborhoods.  South Minneapolis is generally thought to include all neighborhoods and communities south of the Mississippi River (and directly south of Downtown).

Four communities make up South Minneapolis: Phillips, Powderhorn, Longfellow, and Nokomis. Within the communities, there are almost thirty different neighborhoods with a variety of single and multi-family Minneapolis real estate listings available to satisfy every citizen or family’s needs.  In fact, much of the Minneapolis homes for sale are steeped in houses, bungalows, cottages, and apartments.  A few of the neighborhoods include industry, and many offer retail options, but the majority of them provide residential Minneapolis real estate.  There are four historical districts to explore, as well as a number of Minnesota landmarks.

If there was any question about how the city’s heritage has been preserved, one need only look to neighborhood names, many of which have been named after important historical figures, as a testament to Minneapolis’s preservation of culture and history.  In particular, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s poem The Song of Hiawatha has had a lasting impact on the Minnesota real estate. For example, the Nokomis community named itself after Hiawatha’s grandmother, and there’s a neighborhood in the Longfellow (named for the poet) community coined after Hiawatha who is the legendary heroine of The Song of Hiawatha.  Wenonah is another neighborhood name that comes from the epic poem.  She was Hiawatha’s mother (and Nokomis’s daughter).  Minnehaha, a neighborhood in Nokomis, comes from the Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s poetry, too, and it means “laughing waters” in Ojibwa.

Not all of the neighborhoods and communities took their names from The Song of Hiawatha.  Ericsson, a neighborhood in Nokomis, named itself after the Swedish engineer, John Ericsson, who crafted the U.S.S. Monitor for the Navy during the Civil War.  Ventura Village, a relatively new neighborhood in the Phillips community, chose its name with hope of prosperity.  Ventura is Spanish for “luck.”

Whatever South Minneapolis neighborhood one chooses to live in, there are an endless supply of entertainment options for all ages and abilities.  The city enjoys a number of cultural organizations that encourage theater, music, writing, and visual arts.  Twenty-plus lakes are spread out amongst the landscape, as well as wetlands, trails, and parks, which offer activities such as hiking, canoeing, fishing, swimming, and kayaking.
